The Strategic Climate Risks Initiative joins the European Climate Foundation

24.02.2026

We are pleased to announce that the Strategic Climate Risks Initiative (SCRI) has joined the European Climate Foundation as a hosted platform. SCRI is a think-and-do tank based in the UK and working at the forefront of the “new climate reality” — helping governments, institutions, and communities across the world understand and respond to intensifying, non-linear climate risks.

Now hosted by the ECF, SCRI will retain its unique mission and team while receiving operational support and working in synergy with other ECF programmes, under our shared strategy.

At a time when the world is entering uncharted climate territory, SCRI fills a critical gap in the global climate ecosystem: examining what comes next and developing practical strategies for navigating escalating impacts.

A unique focus on non-linear climate risk

SCRI’s work explores the escalation of complex climate risks, and what these mean for societies, economies, and climate action itself. Some of their past projects include:

  • Overshoot, a critically-acclaimed podcast documentary unpacking the huge challenges that come with surpassing 1.5°C of planetary warming (which you can listen to here).
  • Managing Derailment Risk, a report and toolkit examining how certain climate shocks actually undermine climate action, creating a vicious feedback loop.
  • Cohort 2040, a mid-career leadership development programme to help prepare leaders for navigating the escalation of climate-driven instability.

Being hosted by the ECF will enable SCRI to expand its work exploring uncharted futures. Among its new projects is a pioneering initiative to develop scenario exercises for a potential collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a risk that has recently been designated a security threat by some governments.

These efforts all illustrate SCRI’s focus: combining rigorous analysis and scenario mapping to help decisionmakers confront the realities of a more volatile climate future and enhance capabilities for navigating it.

Joining forces for better strategic foresight

As a hosted platform, SCRI will work closely with the ECF to strengthen shared understanding of climate risk and help develop ambitious climate action in an even more uncertain and volatile future.

“We are delighted to be hosted by the European Climate Foundation,” said Laurie Laybourn, Executive Director of SCRI. “This partnership will expand our capacity, deepen our international reach, and help us catalyse action for navigating a more dangerous climate reality.”

In the coming months, SCRI will focus on consolidating its organisational foundations, expanding its research and engagement programmes, and building its next wave of long-term strategic partnerships.
