Ensuring a fair transition to clean, affordable transport

Countries across Europe are moving to reduce pollution from vehicle tailpipes, which are responsible for more than a quarter of Europe’s climate footprint and are a major source of air pollution in cities. We are helping to ensure that this transition to cleaner transport is fair and effective, benefits our health and environment, boosts local economies, and is supported by consumers, auto workers, and the rest of society.

To do this, we are working to promote the shift to electric vehicles (cars, buses, and trucks), while limiting dependence on the mining of critical minerals and the associated negative impacts. We are also striving to secure and create good e-mobility jobs for the future. At city level, we support partners across Europe who are working with residents on measures to reduce air pollution and improve health and quality of life.

We also support initiatives exploring ways to reduce the environmental impact of flying, such as conducting research into policies that would drive investment in cutting-edge clean aviation technologies.

Partnership with the Drive Electric Campaign to supercharge the transition to renewable energy and electric transportation

In November 2023, the ECF-hosted initiative ReNew2030 joined forces with the Drive Electric Campaign to supercharge the transition to renewable energy and electric transportation. The partnership focuses on the role of electrification and critical raw materials to scale a climate-secure and just energy transition in transport and energy. It brings together hundreds of partners working in dozens of countries to advance renewable energy and all forms of zero-emission transport.

ReNew2030 and Drive Electric are both recipients of grants from the TED Audacious Project, a collaborative funding initiative that catalyses social impact on a grand scale and encourages the world’s greatest changemakers to dream bigger. Learn more here.
